As we hope you all know by now, Big Brothers Big Sisters has relocated to North River, just a few kilometres from our old office! We moved into what was previously Molly’s Dairy Bar, and before that, the Fundy Dairy Bar. The Fundy Dairy Bar was built by James Paul Norrie in 1943 and was originally called Fundy Jersey Farm. In 2004 Bev and Gary Whidden purchased the building and renamed it after their nine-year-old Golden Lab, Molly.  In 2009 Bev and Gary Whidden demolished the aging building and built what currently stands now, with our new addition, of course.

For years, this location has been a destination for families during the summer months. It’s a place to stop on your way back from the cottage when you’re not quite ready for the weekend to end. It’s somewhere to celebrate your team’s victory, or perhaps somewhere to take your grandkids right before you take them back to mom or dad’s house. We hope it will continue to be a place where families gather and create lasting memories, which is what our Organization is all about.

When the team here at Big Brothers Big Sisters was deciding what to name our new Dairy Bar, many great ideas were brought to the table. Our goal was to choose a name that really resonated with our local community and hopefully made all residents feel happy, and celebrate their own memories growing up.

“Fundy Scoops Dairy Bar will celebrate our Region and our Organization while acknowledging the family memories made when it was the Fundy Dairy Bar and Molly’s” Said Nick Sharpe, BBBS Executive Director.

Fundy Scoops anticipates opening in May and will be run by youth in the community. A Mentoring Coordinator will oversee the students as well as manage all aspects of the Dairy Bar. All these new positions are part of the new Learn to Lead Program, which provides opportunities for the students to learn about things like financial management, program coordination, fundraising, marketing, child and youth services, Public Relations, and non profit leadership.

“Our Organization values mentorship, supporting local, youth development, relationships, experiences, and learning. This initiative is a blend of all our values and will support the impactful programs we provide to local children and youth” added Sharpe.

Fundy Scoops will also be serving up hot caffeinated beverages thanks to Aroma Maya! Owner and Operator Sergio Garrido has offered to teach our summer staff how to make the perfect latte, cappuccino, or Affogato.  If you haven’t experienced an Affogato before, prepare to be amazed. What could be better than expresso poured over ice cream? We don’t have the answer to that.

Sergio was a university student himself when he started Aroma Maya. He started the business out of his university dorm room and has grown it to be a successful manufacturing facility. That’s the kind of spirit BBBS wants to inspire in young people in this community.

Aside from the ice cream and coffee, we have many other exciting things in the works to make Fundy Scoops the chosen family destination of the summer. We can’t wait for you all to come out to get your first cone at Fundy Scoops! Stay tuned on our website for details leading into the Spring.
